How to implement succession planning at an ASC

When high-performing surgeons are preparing to retire, it can be difficult for ASCs to replace them.

Two panelists discussed the ins and outs of ASC succession at Becker's ASC 26th annual meeting in Chicago. The panelists included:

- Tami Robinson, RN, MSN, administrator and director of nursing for Unity Surgical Center in Lafayette, Ind.

- Brandon O’Dell, BSN, group CEO for Surgical Care Affiliates in Georgia and clinical director of diligence and integration

Three things to know:

1. Prepare ahead of time. Planning a succession can be really time-consuming. The panelists recommended making a succession plan four years before a physician retires to ensure the transition is budgeted for.

2. Planning for a single vs. multispecialty ASC. If an ASC is multispecialty, the center may reevaluate if it's worth replacing the surgeon who's retiring if their specialty wasn't generating much revenue.

3. Keep competition in mind. With unemployment low for those in medicine, ASCs need to keep themselves competitive when hiring new surgeons by offering competitive compensation and benefits.
