How Orthopaedic Surgery Center's leaders are cutting costs — 6 insights

Boardman, Ohio-based Orthopaedic Surgery Center leaders went to Columbus, Ohio to find ways to make their new ASC as cost-friendly as possible, Business Journal Daily reports.

What you should know:

1. OSC is developing a $7 million ASC in Boardman, expected to open in December.

2. OSC leaders visited an ASC in Columbus on a fact-finding mission. While the Columbus facility is a few years old, OSC staff left with several takeaways. For example, OSC Administrator Taylor Cera said the Columbus center regretted its decision to build several overnight stay rooms.

3. Physicians at the Columbus center perform more outpatient than overnight procedures, and demand for outpatient procedures continues to rise as patients and payers look to cut costs.

4. OSC President Michael Engle, MD, said reducing costs was one of its key tenants.

5. "If we can take procedures that are routinely done in a hospital inpatient setting, or even outpatient, and move them into ambulatory centers, we're helping everyone involved," said Dr. Engle.

6. OSC's new center can be expanded if demand necessitates it.
