How New Jersey's Healthcare Facilities Planning Act relates to ASCs — 4 quick facts

Former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie signed amendments to the Healthcare Facilities Planning Act into law Jan 12.

Here's what you should know, according to the American Association for Accreditation of Ambulatory Surgery Facilities:

1. The state's law standardizes requirements for offices providing outpatient surgeries.

2. Under the law, unlicensed one-room ASCs must become licensed by the State Department of Health and follow the same regulations as ASCs.

3. The New Jersey Department of Health will take oversight of the facilities, which were previously under the New Jersey Board of Medical Examiners' jurisdiction.

4. Unlicensed surgical centers operating since Jan. 12 must apply for licensure as an ASC by Jan. 12, 2019.
