Grandview Medical Center in Vestavia Hills, Ala., is the first hospital in the Birmingham area to upgrade its technology to robotic-assisted surgery, according to the Shelby County Reporter.

Here are five highlights:

1. The new surgery system is the da Vinci System.

2. It is designed with the goal of further advancing the technology used in minimally invasive surgery, and can be used across a spectrum of minimally invasive surgical procedures in the areas of urology, gynecology, thoracic, cardiac and general surgery.

3. The new system allows the surgeon to access some areas of the body, such as the chest or pelvis, which are difficult to reach with delicate surgical instruments.

4. For surgical patients this means less time under anesthesia as compared to the current robotic platform.
