Former Cleveland Clinic leader launches health startup: 5 takeaways

David L. Brown, former chair of the Cleveland Clinic's Anesthesiology Institute, launched a health startup.

Here are five takeaways:

1. Named Curadux, the startup advises patients how handle advanced illnesses with educated decisions.

2. Overtreatment for advanced illnesses is a concern, as the healthcare system sometimes incentivizes unnecessary treatments.

3. Undertreatment also causes problems, as healthcare providers seek to reduce healthcare costs.

4. Mr. Brown designed a "care guide," which is backed by physicians who help patients align their values with healthcare decisions.

5. Surviving his own life-threatening illness, Mr. Brown saw a great need for Curadux.

"Americans facing advanced illness today are at risk of overtreatment and undertreatment of their conditions because powerful and silent incentives are often driving their healthcare, rather than the patient's own unique values and goals," said Mr. Brown.
