Florida ASC society celebrates new 24-hour-stay law

The Florida Society of Ambulatory Surgical Centers is celebrating a recent lobbying victory.

A Florida law permitting ASCs to keep patients for up to 24 hours was passed June 25, eliminating a requirement that ASC patients must be admitted and discharged the same day.

Republican Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis signed HB 843 into law after years of debate.

FSASC has championed the legislation since 2014. There were "many attempts to kill the bill this year," FSASC said.

"It was kept alive through the efforts of our legislative director Mike Cusick, our Senate sponsor Senator Gayle Harrell, House sponsor Cindy Stevensen, and our House leaders, Representatives Ray Rodrigues and Paul Renner," the organization wrote on LinkedIn.

FSASC has compiled resources to help its members navigate the new law.
