Carolinas Centers for Sight offers $3k procedure to treat presbyopia — 5 insights

Howard Greene, MD, is one of three ophthalmologists in South Carolina to perform Kamra Inlay, a surgery that improves blurry reading vision and helps the eye focus on nearby objects, according to The Sumter Item. Here are five insights:

1. Dr. Greene performs Kamra Inlay at Florence, S.C.-based Carolinas Centers for Sight and works one day a week at Eye Care Specialty Center in Sumter, S.C.

2. Kamra Inlay can be done at the same time as Lasik surgery, which improves long distance vision, in about 30 minutes total.

3. In Lasik surgery, the dominant eye is aimed for distance. During Kamra Inlay, an inlay mini-ring is inserted in the cornea of the non-dominant eye, which is aimed for short distances. These procedures create an expansion pinhole effect that improves near and far sight.

4. Kamra Inlay has been performed in Europe for about five years and in the U.S. for the past couple years.

5. The procedure can cost $3,500. Combined with Lasik, the price tag increases to about $4,500. No insurance covers Kamra Inlay, according to Dr. Greene.
