Boston University to increase dermatologists practicing in academia: 5 takeaways from the new residency program

Boston University School of Medicine and Boston Medical Center created a dermatology residency program that positions residents to continue their career in academics.

Here are five takeaways:

1. BUSM's dermatology residency program will now include the traditional three-year program as well as a three-year career-focused faculty program.

2. The new experience will establish dermatologists with careers in teaching, patient care and research.

3. The participating junior faculty will receive customized career development courses and mentorship.

4. This new program is an effort to boost academic dermatologists, as only 6 percent of dermatologists practice in the academic field.

5. Vincent Falanga, MD, serves as BUSM's dermatology residency program director.
