Boston Out-Patient Surgical Suites performs Massachusetts' 1st total hip replacement

Newton, Mass.-based Atrius Health physicians James Phillips, MD, and Georges Almacari, MD, performed Massachusetts' first total hip replacement in a freestanding ASC at Waltham, Mass.-based Boston Out-Patient Surgical Suites.

Here's what you should know:

1. This is the second first for Boston Out-Patient Surgical Suites. The center performed Massachusetts' first ambulatory total knee replacement as well.

2. Atrius Health Chief of Orthopedic Surgery Louis Bley, MD, said in a release, "We have a wonderful partner in Boston Out-Patient Surgical Suites as our teams collaborate to provide coordinated care that serves patients at every step before, during and after surgery. Together we look forward to helping more people recover from these procedures comfortably at home where they want to be.”

3. At a surgery center the THR procedure costs around 40 to 60 percent less than the standard $35,000 inpatient facilities charge.
