Bernie Sanders defends healthcare plan to raise taxes — 5 things to know

During a candidate forum on Jan. 25, presidential candidate Bernie Sanders defended his proposal to raise taxes with the goal of lowering healthcare costs, according to nwi.com.

Here are five things to know:

1. In his healthcare plan, Mr. Sanders would replace the nation's current employer-based system on insurance with a single-payer system, which would give coverage to all Americans.

2. Mr. Sanders' said his plan would get rid of co-pays and deductibles as well as better control healthcare spending.

3. In defense of his healthcare proposal, Mr. Sanders said, "Yes, we will raise taxes. We may raise taxes, but we are going to eliminate private health insurance premiums for individuals and businesses."

4. The candidate addressed voters at the CNN town hall at Iowa's Drake University in Des Moines.

5. The most recent Des Moines Register/Bloomberg Politics poll found Sanders is favored by 40 percent of Democratic voters in Iowa, trailing behind Hillary Clinton (42 percent).
