'ASCs are unique, specialized creatures': 4 tips for building a compliant facility

New ASC construction projects face pitfalls from the administrator side as well as the developer side, according to an article published in New York Real Estate Journal.

Here are four tips for ASC construction:

1. Choose a knowledgeable partner. Consider hiring a construction firm with extensive knowledge of ASC project codes and regulations. A company with only general experience may overlook important state or federal codes, which would cause the ASC to fail state inspection, drive up costs and delay the project's completion, according to Garfunkel Wild Partner and Director Greg Bloom. Garfunkel Wild, a law practice, advises construction company Eastman Cooke on ASC projects.

"ASCs are unique, specialized creatures. If you're building an ASC, it's important to hire an architectural and construction firm with bona fide experience working in the state you're involved with," said Garfunkel Wild Vice Chairman Andrew Blustein.

2. Consider patient privacy. During construction, ASCs should be mindful of HIPAA compliance. ASCs should ensure there are private consultation areas, soundproofed rooms, secure medical record storage rooms, properly installed video cameras and strategically placed computers to protect record privacy.

3. Follow construction and design requirements. Construction companies building ASCs must follow state department of health regulations and design standards, including the use of hospital-grade materials. Clean spaces must be separate from soiled utility areas, specimens, blood labs, syringes and medical waste must be stored properly and mechanical systems must contain sufficient ventilation. Surfaces should use wipeable, chemical-tolerant design materials.

4. Incorporate new design trends. In ASC design, focus has shifted toward creating warm, inviting environments with therapeutic benefits. Designers are selecting wood and stone materials over traditional vinyls and ceiling tiles. They're also opting for brighter colors and including amenities such as phone-charging stations
