American College of Surgeons appoints Dr. Valerie Rusch chair of board of regents

The American College of Surgeons elected Valerie W. Rusch, MD, its chair of the board of regents, according to newswise. Dr. Rusch is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons and has served on various ACS committees.

In her new position, Dr. Rusch will collaborate with the ACS executive director and chair the regents' finance and executive committees.

Dr. Rusch is a board-certified thoracic surgeon, serving patients at the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center and teaching at Weill Cornell Medical College, both in New York. She serves as chair of the Mesothelioma Subcommittee of the International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer Staging Committee.

She treats cancers of the lung, airways, esophagus, mediastinum, chest wall and pleura. Dr. Rusch has led clinical trials for thoracic malignancies treatment.

After receiving her medical degree from Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons in New York, Dr. Rusch completed a general surgery residency and thoracic surgery resident at the University of Washington in Seattle. She completed her education with a fellowship at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston.
