8 things to know about the growing ASC market — Procedure volume up 22.9%

Franklin Trust Ratings released a study of surgical procedures in the top 50 largest U.S. markets and found there were 16 million outpatient surgical procedures performed at 894 hospitals and 1,575 ASCs in those markets.

Here are eight things to know:

1. ASC surgical volume grew in 46 of the 50 largest markets, while at the same time hospitals lost share of the outpatient procedures. The overall ASC surgical procedure volume increased 22.9 percent nationally.

2. There are 35.8 million outpatient surgical procedures performed every year in hospital-based outpatient departments and ASCs nationwide.

3. From 2015 to 2016, ASC growth more than doubled in 20 of the top 50 markets.

4. The average ASC market share of the top 50 markets increased from 53 percent to 63 percent in one year.

5. Gastrointestinal procedures saw the largest growth, with volume increasing 19.4 percent from 2015 to 2016.

6. Eye procedures were up 2.8 percent in the study period.

7. Early- and mid-stage markets, where ASCs have less than 60 percent market share, account for 38 percent of the top 50 markets.

8. Markets where ASCs have more than 60 percent market share account for 62 percent of the top 50 markets.
