8 principles to boost physician morale

Physician burnout often can be all encompassing and affects a significant number of physicians. Nearly one out of every three physicians experiences burnout at any given time.

Internal medicine physician, Charles DeShazer, MD, referred to former CMS Administrator Don Berwick's eight principles to improve physician morale, according to HIT Consultant.

Here are eight principles.

1. Forgo individual incentives.

2. Revolve your business strategy on quality. Focusing on obtaining the maximum amount of revenue often does not fit the patient's best interests.

3. Consider what is best for the whole. At times, you may have to prioritize the needs of others over your professional prerogative.

4. Limit mandatory measures. Dr. DeShazer explained excessive measurement is irresponsible.

5. Complete transparency. Make your costs and outcomes completely transparent.

6. Listen to your patients. Actively listen to patients and ask them questions such as "What matters to you?"

7. Foster an environment of respect and consideration. Open dialogue can only take place when all parties feel respected and considered.

8. Utilize improvement science. Although improvement methods work, many healthcare professionals do not use them. These methods should be widely applied across the healthcare spectrum.
