South Carolina CON program up for review.
A South Carolina House of Representatives panel responsible for reviewing the state's certificate of need program began its work Wednesday. Rep. Murrell Smith, a Republican, is chairing the committee, whose task it is to provide recommendations for reforming the CON program and address next steps for dealing with healthcare facilities that expanded while the program was suspended.

HHS reconsiders 2015 PPACA enrollment goal.
The Obama administration is reconsidering its enrollment target for the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act exchanges next year, HHS Secretary Sylvia Burwell told reporters Wednesday. Read the full report on Becker's Hospital Review.

Retained surgical items traced back to team responsibility.
Surgical item retention is most often due to team, rather than individual, errors, according to research published in the American Journal of Surgery. For retained item events, 50 of 71 involved team or system errors, and 37 of 71 involved intraoperative omission or variance of safety protocols. Less than 10 percent of RSI incidents were due to a single individual's error.

HealthCare.gov cost more than double estimate.

Study finds Medicare reimbursement does not favor surgeons.

Anti-addiction groups call for resignation of FDA chief.
More than a dozen anti-addiction activist groups have submitted a letter to HHS Secretary Sylvia Burwell calling for the resignation of Margaret Hamburg, MD, U.S. FDA Commissioner in light of her policies on opioids. The controversy comes at a time during which opioids deaths have been on the rise: Deaths from painkillers tripled between 1991 and 2011 to about 17,000 deaths annually, according to CDC figures.
