7 things for ASC leaders to know for Thursday — Oct. 5, 2017

Here are seven industry updates for ASC leaders to note for Oct. 5.

University Medical opens ASC to see patients following Las Vegas mass shooting
Las Vegas-based University Medical Center, a level 1 trauma center, saw an influx of wounded patients after gunman Stephen Paddock, a 64-year-old Nevada resident, opened fire at a country concert Oct. 1. Space was limited following the shooting, with 90 patients entering the center's doors within the first few hours. To accommodate the incoming patients, the trauma center opened its ASC as well as a recovery area and a preoperative area.

Massachusetts medical center removing GI endoscopy unit from ASC
Pittsfield, Mass.-based Berkshire Medical Center is moving its endoscopy unit from Pittsfield-based Crane Center for Ambulatory Surgery into the main hospital. The unit will have several treatment rooms and will offer patients gastrointestinal procedures, colonoscopies and other endoscopic procedures.

Sentara closing medical center, ASC in Kitty Hawk
Norfolk, Va.-based Sentara Healthcare is closing its Regional Medical Center and the Kitty Hawk ASC, both in Kitty Hawk, N.C. Sentara cited the facilities' conditions as a core reason for the closings.

Former North American Partners in Anesthesia CEO Dr. Tim Down takes helm of Pain Specialists of America
Pain Specialists of America made a series of leadership changes after acquiring Pain Specialists of Austin's and Central Texas Pain Center's nonclinical assets. The transaction resulted in PSA naming Tim Dowd, MD, CEO. Dr. Dowd was previously the CEO of North American Partners in Anesthesia.

Mid-Bronx Endoscopy Center officially opens
New York City-based Mid-Bronx Endoscopy Center officially began operations in August. The center is a joint venture between New York City-based Bronx-Lebanon Hospital Center, New York City-based Morris Heights Health Center, four hospital-employed GI physicians and four independent gastroenterologists.

Blue Cross Blue Shield's MA plans to cover outpatient surgery for South Carolina residents
Starting this fall, BlueCross BlueShield of South Carolina will sell Medicare Advantage plans in 23 state counties during open enrollment. The plans will cover outpatient surgery as well as specialist care, urgent care and prescription drug plans, among several other services.

Silver Cross Surgery Center opens in Illinois
New Lenox, Ill.-based Silver Cross Surgery Center opened across the street from Silver Cross Hospital. The center's physicians specialize in ENT, head and neck surgery, general surgery, gynecology, ophthalmology, orthopedics, podiatry and urology.
