Tucson-based Dermatology & Plastic Surgeons of Arizona is moving to a new location with a surgery center in Sierra Vista, Ariz. The group is moving to accommodate growing services lines.

Arizona hospital gains approval for $45M expansion
The Show Low City Council and Industrial Development Authority granted approval for Show Low, Ariz.-based Summit Health Regional Medical Center to move forward with a $45 million expansion project that will include a medical office building and ASC.

MM&M honors Dr. Richard Wender with outstanding contribution to healthcare award
MM&M bestowed its platinum award for outstanding contributions to healthcare on Richard Wender, MD. Dr. Wender is the American Cancer Society's chief cancer control officer. He served the organization for the last 21 years. He was the first primary care physician to be elected as the organization's president, and he became its first chief cancer control officer in 2013.

Anesthesiologist, former ASC board member Sen. Tim Melson seeks re-election
Alabama Sen. Tim Melson, MD, R-Florence, is seeking re-election to the District 1 Alabama Senate. When he ran for the state Senate three years ago, Sen. Melson said he strived to bring more jobs and economic development to the region. He is seeking re-election to finish the work he started to meet this goal. An anesthesiologist by training, Sen. Melson was a board of directors member for Florence (Ala.) Surgery Center from 1995 to 2008.

Florida representative files bill for 24-hour ASC stays
Florida officials filed a motion to pass a bill permitting 24-hour stays at ASCs. The bill would permit up to 24-hour patient stays at ASCs, which currently are outlawed in the state. The bill also would allow the state to open recovery care centers where patients could stay up to 72 hours.

Former Mountain Laurel Surgery Center nursing director sentenced to 2 months jail time for fentanyl theft
A Wayne County judge sentenced Karen Feldner to two months in jail and three months on house arrest for fentanyl theft. Ms. Feldner received the sentence for stealing almost 2,000 fentanyl vials from Honesdale, Pa.-based Mountain Laurel Surgery Center, where she formerly worked as the nursing director.

Trump considers former Lilly USA exec Alex Azar for HHS secretary
Alex Azar is the latest candidate to join the ranks for the next potential head of HHS. Two White House officials said Mr. Azar is President Donald Trump's top pick for the position, with one official saying Mr. Trump signed off on Mr. Azar. However, another White House official said no decision is final until the White House makes a formal announcement.
