The Ambulatory Surgery Center Association rebuked a story by Kaiser Health News and USA Today saying it misrepresented the safety and quality of outpatient surgery.

Anthem halts controversial modifier 25 reimbursement policy
Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield won't proceed with a policy that would have slashed reimbursement rates for evaluation and management services billed with modifier 25 by 50 percent.

Vermont senators drop ASC provider tax proposal
Vermont's Senate Health and Welfare Committee unanimously voted against a bill to regulate and tax independent surgery centers, removing one barrier to the planned 2019 opening of the state's second ASC. The bill would have imposed care board oversight and various expenses, including a 6 percent provider tax based on net patient revenue and a $2,000 annual licensing fee.

U of Alabama at Birmingham anesthesiologist dies after being assaulted in Mexico
University of Alabama at Birmingham anesthesiologist William Thomas O'Byrne III, MD, died Feb. 28, after he was physically assaulted while on vacation in Mexico. Dr. O'Byrne, 54, was vacationing in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, with friends earlier in the week. He was assaulted while on vacation, severely beaten and left for dead in a ditch. His friends found him and rushed him to a hospital, before he was flown back to the U.S. on life support.

EVP of customer relations retiring from The Joint Commission
Ann Scott Blouin, RN, PhD, is retiring from The Joint Commission, effective April 13. Cheryl Hoying, RN, PhD, will succeed her as chief nurse executive and executive vice president of customer relations.

UCHealth Longs Peak Hospital, ASC named project of the year
Longmont, Colo.-based UCHealth Longs Peak Hospital received the Project of the Year Award from the Longmont Economic Development Partnership. Longs Peak Hospital features an adjoining ASC, a level 3 trauma center, operating rooms and advanced cardiac services.
