New York health system eliminating outpatient surgery due to freestanding surgery center proliferation
Utica, N.Y.-based Mohawk Valley Health System will no longer perform outpatient surgery at its Faxton campus in Barneveld, N.Y. The campus is no longer offering outpatient surgeries due to an increased number of freestanding surgery centers in the area.

Noncompete clause unenforceable for physician who dissented to merger, court rules

After 9 years, Gastro Health replaces CEO
Miami-based Gastro Health's longterm CEO Alexander Fernandez departed suddenly in February, and Joseph Garcia was named his replacement. Mr. Fernandez served as Gastro Health's CEO since April 2009.

Retired ophthalmologist Thomas Dale Case, MD, 76, died March 12. Dr. Case helped establish the Poulsbo, Wash.-based North Kitsap Medical Center, which opened one of the first outpatient surgery centers in the area — Pacific Surgery Center — through its Pacific Eyecare division.
