Cookeville Center for Pain Management owner to pay $1.45M for prescribing "useless" painkillers
Matthew Anderson and his management company, PMC, will pay $1.45 million to settle claims Cookeville (Tenn.) Center for Pain Management and its employees improperly billed Medicare and TennCare for painkillers.

$10M gift sways Massachusetts hospital to dedicate outpatient center to donors
Tidelands Georgetown (Mass.) Memorial Hospital's soon-to-open surgery center will be named after the late Tom and Jean Yawkey, after the Yawkey foundation donated $10 million to the hospital. The surgery center will be known as the Yawkey Surgery Pavilion, also in Georgetown. The 43,500-square-foot center is set to open in March.

Johns Hopkins develops blood test for 8 cancers, 5 of which have no screening option
Researchers from Baltimore-based Johns Hopkins Kimmel Cancer Center developed CancerSEEK, a single blood test that screens for eight common cancers, while also identifying the cancer's location. CancerSEEK can be used by primary care providers to identify ovary, liver, stomach, pancreas, esophagus, colorectum, lung or breast cancer. Those eight cancers account for more than 60 percent of all cancer-related deaths in the U.S.

Wills Eye Institute denied hospital certification because of outpatient caseload
Philadelphia-based Wills Eye Institute will remain classified as an ASC after a U.S. district judge upheld CMS' decision to reject the center's specialty care providers application in 2013. The center previously operated as a hospital. In 2006, it sold its inpatient business to Philadelphia-based Thomas Jefferson Hospital and was reclassified by CMS as an ASC.

Nurses can now practice in multiple states with eNLC license
Nurses with Enhanced Nurse Licensure Compact multistate licenses may begin practicing in eNLC states as of Jan. 19. The eNLC allows registered nurses and licensed practical/vocational nurses to have one multistate license, which allows them to practice in their home state and other eNLC states.

57% of physicians would require Americans to hold health insurance
