Surgery Partners authorizes $50M share repurchase program
Surgery Partners' board of directors authorized a share repurchase program that allows the company to repurchase up to $50 million of its common stock. The timing and size of repurchasing is undetermined; it will depend on market conditions as well as other factors.

Anesthesiologist charged with murder after allegedly giving lethal dose of Demerol to California ASC patient
Stephen Kyosung Kim, MD, an anesthesiologist, was charged with murder after allegedly administering a lethal dose of Demerol to a patient postoperatively. Dr. Kim was the anesthesiologist during a procedure at Beverly Hills, Calif.-based Rodeo Drive Plastic Surgery Center. Dr. Kim performed the procedure on another physician, Mark Greenspan, MD. Dr. Kim allegedly administered sedatives before surgery, and then Demerol while Dr. Greenspan was in the recovery room. Dr. Greenspan suffered cardiac arrest soon after receiving the Demerol.

Montecito Medical acquires 2 Wisconsin buildings housing ASCs
Montecito Medical acquired two medical offices in Milwaukee that house ASCs. The buildings house the Aurora East Mequon (Wis.) Surgery Center and the Franklin (Wis.) Surgery Center.

Medical Facilities Corp. paying monthly dividend of $0.09 per share
Medical Facilities Corp. paid qualified shareholders a monthly dividend of $0.09 per share payable Dec. 15.

Baptist Medical Center Nassau opens 30k-sq-ft surgery center
Fernandina Beach, Fla.-based Baptist Medical Center Nassau is opening a 30,000-square-foot, $22.5 million surgery center in Fernandina Beach. The center opened Dec. 14, but won't be operational until Jan. 2, 2018.

Texas Institute for Surgery earns Press Ganey award for employee engagement
Dallas-based Texas Institute for Surgery received Press Ganey's 2017 Guardian of Excellence Award. Texas Institute for Surgery, a joint venture between Dallas-based physicians and Texas Health Presbyterian Dallas, earned recognition for achieving employee engagement at the 95th percentile or above from Press Ganey on a consistent basis.

Total joint replacement the main cause of litigation in one metropolitan area
