52% of healthcare CIOs to boost IT budgets in 2017 — 6 takeaways

Healthcare IT executives anticipate they will continue to face shortages in staff with technology skills, based on a "Harvey Nash/KPMG CIO Survey," according to HealthData Management.

The survey included responses from 190 healthcare CIOs.

Here are six takeaways:

1. Of the healthcare CIOs, more than half (52 percent) expect to boost IT budgets over the next year, compared to 45 percent of CIOs from all industries.

2. Eighty percent of healthcare CIOs note the growing role of IT in their organizations.

3. Only 50 percent of healthcare CIOs, however, reported their organizations possess a digital business vision and strategy.

4. Healthcare CIOs said their organizations are lacking the following skill sets:

• Big data/analytics — 45 percent
• Project management — 36 percent
• Change management — 30 percent
• Security/resilience — 29 percent

5. Cloud computing is receiving more attention in the healthcare industry, for the following reasons:

• To enhance availability and resiliency — 45 percent
• To utilize the best solution — 35 percent
• To improve agility and responsiveness — 34 percent

6. Healthcare CIOs noted the following as challenges to adopting cloud computing, however:

• Data loss and privacy risks — 55 percent
• Integration with architecture — 46 percent
• Legal and regulatory compliance — 42 percent
