5 ways NYC Health + Hospitals plans to improve & expand ambulatory care

NYC Health + Hospitals released a five-point plan to transform the health system's ambulatory care operations. The plan is designed to increase access to primary and specialty care.

Here is a rundown of NYC Health + Hospitals' five-point strategy:

1. Continuity of care and fidelity with primary care physicians. A new scheduling system is being put in place to connect patients with their assigned primary care physician. The health system is planning to hire 30 primary care physicians through the initiative.

2. Reducing no-show rates. The health system plans to reduce no show rates at outpatient clinics through reducing wait times.

3. Reduce long wait times for specialty care. Using the eConsult system to increase communication between patients and providers can lead the patient to be treated in the primary care setting instead of in the specialty clinic, decreasing wait times.

4. Improve clinic management. The health system is redefining roles for clinicians, so doctors, nurses and nurse practitioners can spend more time on direct patient care.

5. Increase revenue through improving billing and coding. A staff training program on patient registration, submitting coded billing paperwork to payers and receiving the appropriate documentation is being adopted to help increase revenue.
