4 recent lawsuits involving ASCs, management companies

Sutter Health and Tenet Healthcare were among a handful of entities named in recent lawsuits.

Four to know:

1. Sacramento, Calif.-based Sutter Health and a three-surgeon cardiovascular group will together pay the government over $46 million to settle allegations that they violated Stark Law, the Department of Justice announced Nov. 15.

2. Retina Institute of California Medical Group and seven other defendants, including an ASC, paid $6.65 million to settle allegations that they defrauded Medicare and Medicaid, though they did not admit liability, according to the Department of Justice.

3. A judge in New Jersey will allow a class-action lawsuit brought by around 400 patients against a Saddlebrook, N.J.-based surgery center that potentially exposed thousands of patients to HIV and hepatitis B and C, according to NJ.com.

4. Dallas-based Tenet plans to pay around $66 million to settle a lawsuit alleging the company violated the False Claims Act, the Anti-Kickback Statute and Stark Law related to services performed at one of its hospitals, according to an SEC filing.
