33% of family physicians are pursuing value-based payment systems — 6 observations

Nearly one in three family physicians is currently pursuing value-based payment options, as found in a study by the American Academy of Family Physicians.

Humana sponsored the study.

Here are six observations:

1. Nineteen percent of family physicians are developing value-based payment capabilities. However, they are waiting until results are well-known before fully pursuing the opportunity.

2. The study found 61 percent of family physicians receive payment from seven or more health plans. Of those physicians, 38 percent receive payment from 10 health plans or more.

3. More than 90 percent of surveyed physicians cited a lack of staff time as a challenge to implement a value-based payment system.

4. Thirty-three percent of surveyed physicians said they were unaware how the payments were distributed within their practices.

5. Of the surveyed participants, 69 percent said value-based payments will not enhance patient care.

6. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services aims to tie 50 percent of fee-for-service Medicare payments to value-based payment models by 2018.

"The results of this study tell us that physicians are genuinely concerned about the time needed to transition to value-based payment and want to ensure that their efforts translate to care improvement," said Roy A. Beveridge, MD, Humana's chief medical officer.
