3 Tips on Physician and Staff Recruitment For ASC Administrators

Here are three tips on how to effectively and successfully recruit physicians and staff to your ambulatory surgery center.

1. Conduct a full search before making a final hire decision. Tom Jacobs, CEO and co-founder of MedHQ, says especially when planning or starting a new ASC, staff members or upper administrative employees may be hired based on their loyalty and history with current physician-owners. However, Mr. Jacobs says such hiring habits may cause the ASC to overlook a "better-suited" candidate.

"It's always recommended to do a full search especially for the most senior-level positions in the center," he says. "A full search should be based on a very clear understanding of the critical skills and attributes needed to thrive in each leadership position."

2. Look for strong surgeons who could become future partners. Especially when there is potential for a merger or acquisition of the ASC, it is critical surgery centers recruit surgeons who bring something special to the facility. Jon Vick, president of ASCs Inc., suggests adding a surgeon who performs a new procedure or adding more surgeons to supplement the surgeries performed by the current partners, which will increase patient volume. "The companies are looking for quality and growth opportunities," says Mr. Vick. "They want a center that has a high quality medical staff with growth opportunities."

3. Utilize corporate marketing to entice high-quality physicians. Bill Gilbert, vice president of marketing at AdvantEdge Healthcare Solutions, says marketing a surgery center's best qualities can attract physician-investors whose professional fees have waned in recent years.

"One way is to show the center's books to new surgeons and get them excited about the financial opportunities," he says. "If another center down the road closed and the surgeons are talking about going to a center that's 20 miles away, and you have to go past your center to get there, you need to reach out. You need to show them what the upside is and use the data to show them your center will be a great financial return."
