3 Ideas to Streamline Costs, Improve Profits

In a presentation at the 9th Annual Orthopedic, Spine and Pain Management-Driven ASC Conference in Chicago on June 10, Jeff Blankinship, president of Surgical Notes, John Merski, executive director of Human Resources for MedHQ, and Jon Hamrick, executive vice president of networking and sourcing for Access MediQuip, discussed three ideas to streamline costs and improve profits.

Mr. Merski explained the potential benefits of outsourcing, such as providing accounting services, human capital management and system integration. The accounting services include gathering, interpreting and acting on financial data. The human capital management services include talent acquisition, timekeeping, payroll and human resource management systems. Outsourcing can integrate these accounting, HRMS and other systems.

Mr. Hamrick described Access MediQuip's services, including device supply chain, data and healthcare management solutions. He said ambulatory surgery centers can benefit from these solutions by improving volume, physician and patient satisfaction, cash flow and predictability of surgical margins.

Mr. Blankinship said increased utilization of information technology can improve work flow processes. Using technology for responsibilities such as transcription, scheduling and satisfaction surveys can increase center efficiencies, according to Mr. Blankinship. He suggested ASCs utilize as much technology as possible, which may require the management team and staff to be retrained in the available tools.
