16 Statistics on Physician Payment Model Trends for Key ASC Specialties

Dollar SignHere are 16 statistics on physician preferences for payment models now and in the future for key ambulatory surgery center specialties based on the Medscape Physician Compensation Report 2013.

General Surgeon

•    4 percent have either cash-only or concierge-based practices
•    27 percent are participating in an accountable care organization or plan to within the coming year
•    8 percent plan to stop taking current or new Medicare patients
•    26 percent said they would drop poorly paying insurers

Gastroenterologist

•    4 percent have cash-only practices
•    17 percent are currently participating in an accountable care organization and 9 percent plan to within the year
•    58 percent will continue taking new and current Medicare/Medicaid patients
•    22 percent say they won't drop low-paying insurers because they need all payers

Orthopedics

•    2 percent have a concierge practice
•    13 percent say they will join an accountable care organization within the year, while 9 percent are already participating
•    13 percent plan to stop taking new Medicare/Medicaid patients and another 6 percent said they will stop taking current Medicare/Medicaid patients
•    37 percent plan to drop poorly paying insurance carriers

Ophthalmologist

•    7 percent are in a concierge practice or cash-only practice
•    14 percent are currently participating in an accountable care organization or plan to participate within the next year
•    61 percent say they will continue to see Medicare/Medicaid patients
•    42 percent plan to drop poorly paying insurers
