10 reasons why the healthcare industry should prioritize Internet security

The healthcare industry must become fully aware of the dangers hackers pose for healthcare patients and workers. Here are 10 key facts to note about Internet security, according to ConsumerAffairs. 

1. Community Health Systems, a for-profit hospital network, revealed that Chinese hackers stole data from more than 4.5 million patients last August.

2. Last February, 80 million current and former Anthem customers had their records compromised by Internet hackers dating back to 2002.

3. There were 11 million medical and financial records from Premera Blue Cross were breached by hackers in March.

4. In May, 1.1 million records from CareFirst Blue Cross/Blue Shield were compromised by hackers.

5. One in 3 Americans has had their health records hacked.

6. Protected health records can sell anywhere from $20 to an upwards of $70 on the black-market.

7. A MIFA report stated that approximately 65 percent of medical identity theft victims had to pay more than $13,000 to fix the problem.

8. Medical devices such as insulin pumps and heart rate monitors are being hacked in addition to medical records.

9. Victims spend an average of 200 hours on amending the issue of medical identity theft.

10. In 2014, 2 million Americans were victims of medical identity theft.
