Tallgrass Surgical Center in Kansas acquired by hospital: 5 things to know

Laura Dyrda -

Topeka, Kan.-based St. Francis Campus, a member of the University of Kansas Health System, purchased Tallgrass Surgical Center in Topeka.

"With healthcare's growing consumer focus, patients tell us they want convenience, better access to care and more options," said UKHS St. Francis CEO Steve Anderson. "Tallgrass Surgical Center offers all of these and is a first-class surgical facility, staffed by well-trained, high-performing professionals. We look forward to welcoming them to our family."

Five things to know:

1. Opened in 2002, Tallgrass Surgical Center had been a freestanding, multispecialty ASC owned by a group of physicians.

2. The ASC includes three operating rooms and one procedure room focused on general surgery, gynecology, ophthalmology, orthopedic surgery, pain management, ENT and other services.

3. Both parties expect the transaction to close in the first quarter of this year. The transaction is subject to regulatory approvals and closing conditions.

4. Joining the health system will give the ASC's surgeons and patients access to the hospital's resources and improve coordination of care across care settings, according to Tallgrass President Benedict Figuerres, MD.

5. The terms of the agreement were not disclosed.
