Specialists' One-Day Surgery Center seeks approval for 2nd ASC — 5 insights

Syracuse, N.Y.-based Specialists' One-Day Surgery is seeking the New York Public Health and Health Planning Council's approval to construct a new ASC and to modify their existing ASC to meet increased demands.

Here's what you should know:

1. The new center would be located in Syracuse and would cost $15.47 million. It would feature eight operating rooms, 12 preoperative stations and 27 postoperative stations. It would exclusively provide orthopedics services.

2. The existing surgery center currently offers patients both orthopedic and pain management services. Center administrators would like to remodel the center to handle pain management cases exclusively.

3. Center administrators feel the current center cannot handle demand for orthopedics services. The existing center also cannot handle complex orthopedic cases like spine, foot, ankle and joint replacement.

4. Center administrators estimated physicians would perform 9,521 cases at the new center the first year it is operational.

5. The council is expected to approve the project Nov. 16.
