Ohio's Miami Valley Hospital to Create Robotic Surgery Training Center With Donation

Miami Valley Hospital will construct a center to train physicians in robotic surgery techniques, financed by a Dayton-area businessman's donation, according to a Dayton Daily News report.

Hospital officials say The Brethen Center for Surgical Advancement in Robotics and Minimally Invasive Surgery should open by Thanksgiving. The center is named after Robert Brethen, a Kettering, Ohio, resident and chairman and CEO of a Dayton holding company.

The center will initially be used to train surgical residents at Miami Valley Hospital and other surgeons within the Premier Health Partners network, according to the report. The center will train 20 to 25 surgeons a year and will eventually be opened up to train surgeons from other systems.

Miami Valley Hospital implemented robotic surgery in 2006 and currently performs 800 robotic procedures a year.
