Amid concerns over the proposed merger of Maimonides Medical Center into New York City Health & Hospitals, the Medical Society of the State of New York has adopted a policy to protect the admitting and surgical privileges of private practice physicians as a condition of any hospital merger or acquisition, according to a March 30 news release.
Brooklyn, N.Y.-based Maimonides Health announced plans to join NYC Health + Hospitals in December, with the deal expected to finalize in the coming months. Under the proposed agreement, Maimonides would receive up to $2.2 billion over five years through a state grant and would gain access to higher Medicaid reimbursement rates available to public hospitals.
MSSNY said it will advocate for the preservation of salary, benefits and public service loan forgiveness eligibility for physicians, residents and fellows affected by the merger, and will ask the American Medical Association Litigation Center to investigate potential legal action to protect private practice physicians’ staff and surgical privileges in any such transaction.
