Dr. Fitzgerald is a professor of clinical pediatrics at the Indiana University School of Medicine.
The Distinguished Hoosier Award is one of the highest honors given out by the State of Indiana to its citizens, according to the release. It is granted at the discretion of the governor to Hoosiers who brought admiration and respect to the state through their character and accomplishments.
Dr. Fitzgerald was nominated for this award by his colleagues. He is as a specialist in the field of pediatric gastroenterology, hepatology and nutrition. He founded the division of pediatric gastroenterology at Riley Hospital for Children at IU Health and for many years was the only pediatric gastroenterologist in Indiana.
