The freestanding surgery center was developed by Ortho-4-States, an orthopedic group formerly of Joplin, Mo. The physicians crossed into Kansas to build a new facility due to the managed care contracting restrictions in the Joplin market; as an added benefit, Kansas also has lower medical malpractice insurance rates, according to Ms. Morris.

The physicians built a 14,000-square-foot surgery center with two ORs and four large overnight rooms to accommodate the additional recovery time for spine cases performed at the center.

The physician-owners and -users of the facility include:

  • J. Timothy Ogden, MD — General orthopedic and shoulder replacement
  • J. Christopher Banwart, MD — Fellowship-trained joint replacement surgery; hip and knee replacements
  • Jonathan L. Grantham, MD — Orthopedic sports specialist
  • Brian J. Ipsen, MD — Board-certified spine surgeon
  • Robert F. Stringer, DO — General orthopedic
  • Paul W. Toma, DO — General orthopedic
  • James D. Smith, MD — Fellowship-trained spine surgeon
  • Mark E. McNemar, DO — Fellowship-trained hand/upper extremity and microvascular surgeon
  • Michael L. Hearndon, DO — Fellowship-trained interventional pain management
  • Benjamin Rosenberg, DDS — Pediatric dentistry

A new 50,0000-square-foot built by Ortho-4-States includes the Ortho-4-States practice, physical therapy, aquatic rehabilitation and MRI.
