Maine hospital's surgical department closes, outpatient surgeries transferred

Northern Light Blue Hill (Maine) Hospital is discontinuing surgical services, including outpatient procedures, according to the Castine Patriot.

Key details:

1. The procedures will be transferred to Ellsworth-based Northern Light Maine Coast Hospital, where the surgical volume is three times higher.

2. Employees affected by the closure have been offered positions at Maine Coast or other facilities.

3. Michael Murnik, MD, vice president and physician executive for the Maine Coast and Blue Hill locations said Blue Hill is looking for specialists to boost nonsurgical outpatient services.
