Future real estate trends & anticipated growth for 8 ASC specialties

Fifty-eight percent of recent and planned medical construction projects are in the outpatient arena, according to Colliers International Senior Vice President Beth Young.

Ms. Young, who specializes in the marketing and sale of hospitals, ASCs and other healthcare properties, summarized a speech presented at the May BOMA Healthcare Conference in Houston.

With government incentives, health systems are transitioning from hospital settings to ASCs, medical office buildings, urgent care centers, freestanding emergency departments and micro-hospitals, Ms. Young said.

Here are six anticipated trends in the ASC space.

1. The design priorities for providers moving forward with ASC development are:

  • Convenient location
  • Consistent branding
  • Soothing environment and easy-to-find locations
  • Co-located services
  • Extra space for primary or urgent care

2. ASCs will respond to surgical technology advancements by improving their infrastructure or design to take on higher-acuity procedures.

3. From 2016 to 2026, general surgery is expected to grow from 18 percent to 52 percent in ASCs.

4. Gastroenterology is projected to grow from 13 percent to 51 percent in the same period.

5. Anticipated growth for neurosciences is from 6 percent to 50 percent.

6. Urology, orthopedics, spine, ENT and cardiovascular procedures are also projected to grow, but less dramatically.
