Franklin, Tenn.-based Community Health Systems is pressing forward with hospital divestitures in 2025 as part of its effort to sharpen its strategic focus, exit non-core markets and reduce debt.
“We’re still pursuing some divestitures and are in some early conversations,” President and CEO Kevin Hammons said during the company’s Oct. 24 third-quarter earnings call. “We’re continuing to get inbound interest and are in more advanced discussions on a couple of deals that could be announced later this year.”
Here are four recent transactions:
1. Commonwealth Health: In October, CHS agreed to sell the three-hospital system based in Scranton, Pa., to Tenor Health Foundation, marking its planned exit from Pennsylvania. A prior sale to WoodBridge Healthcare for about $120 million was terminated in November. The Tenor deal is pending funding and regulatory approval, with closing expected in the fourth quarter.
2. Lake Norman Regional Medical Center: CHS sold the 123-bed hospital in Mooresville, N.C., to Duke University Health System for $284 million on April 1. It has since been renamed Duke Health Lake Norman Hospital.
3. ShorePoint Health: On March 1, CHS completed the $260 million sale of ShorePoint Health-Port Charlotte (Fla.) and assets of ShorePoint Health-Punta Gorda to AdventHealth.
4. Merit Health Biloxi (Miss.): CHS sold the 153-bed facility to Memorial Health System on Jan. 31, expanding Memorial’s network to three hospitals.
