Current and former employees of Sutter Health's midtown Sacramento surgery center accused the organization of preventing them from taking breaks in hearings May 7. About 30 employees are seeking lost wages and penalties.

Surgical Care Affiliates partners with Massachusetts Avenue Surgery Center
Bethesda, Md.-based Massachusetts Avenue Surgery Center became a part of Surgical Care Affiliates' network of surgical care providers. Massachusetts Avenue Surgery Center's 27 physician partners serve patients in Maryland, Virginia and the District of Columbia.

Envision board ponders ways to boost value — Company sale on the table
Nashville, Tenn.-based Envision Healthcare reported $307.6 million in net revenues for ambulatory services, a 2.6 percent year-over-year decrease. Envision attributed the decline to weather- and flu-related cancellations. To enhance shareholder value, Envision's board is conducting a full review of options, which include rationalizing the company's portfolio or selling the company.

University of Maryland Medical System plans $50M investment in medical center with ASC
Baltimore-based University of Maryland Medical System filed a plan to invest $50 million in a new medical center next to the Laurel (Md.) Regional Hospital. The new facility, UM Laurel Medical Center, will feature a surgery center, 24/7 emergency care, behavioral health resources and outpatient programs such as wellness promotion.

WellSpan Health delays opening of $49M outpatient center
The anticipated opening of WellSpan Health and Surgery Center in Penn Township, Penn., has been pushed back to spring 2019. The 80,000-square-foot, $49 million outpatient facility was initially expected to open fall 2018.

Texas Free Market Surgery's 2 ASCs, hospital join self-pay promoting network
Lake Hills-based Texas Free Market Surgery is adding its two ASCs and surgical hospital to Health Beyond Insurance's provider network. HBI beneficiaries will now be able to go to Lake Hills-based The Hospital at Westlake Medical Center, Lake Hills-based Westlake Hills Surgery Center and Austin, Texas-based EHI Surgery Center.

Cumberland Valley Surgery Center completes 1st opioid-free TJR
Hagerstown, Md.-based Cumberland Valley Surgery Center completed its first total knee replacement without using opioids. The surgery center staff began planning for the procedure in November 2017 and performed it successfully at the end of April. To facilitate pain management, the surgeons implanted a pump into the top of the patient's knee, which released a numbing medicine for three days after the procedure.
