Here are 54 surgery center partnerships, acquisitions and new joint ventures over the past 12 months.



Houston-based Nobilis Health acquired 50.1 percent ownership in Elite Surgical Affiliates' three ASCs and one surgical hospital to complete an integration of the company.

Buffalo, N.Y.-based Catholic Health received the first approval required to acquire a 40 percent stake in Orchard Park, N.Y.-based Sterling Surgical Center.

Coral Gables-based Baptist Health South Florida acquired a majority interest in Boca Raton, Fla.-based South Palm Ambulatory Surgery Center.

Parker, Colo.-based InSight Vision Group purchased Lone Tree, Colo.-based Renewal Surgery Center.

Carter Validus Mission Critical REIT II acquired a medical campus in Silverdale, Wash., with two surgery centers for $9.6 million.

Dallas-based Baylor Scott & White teamed up with United Surgical Partners International to purchase majority ownership in Tyler-based Texas Spine & Joint Hospital.

Private equity firm KKR acquired Covenant Surgical Partners from previous owners and shareholders.

Easton-based University of Maryland Community Medical Group acquired Easton-based Digestive Health Associates.

Hays (Kan.) Medical Center bought Centennial, Colo.-based Centura Health's shares in the Great Bend, Kan.-based St. Rose Health Center, an ASC.

Medical group Derby (Kan.) MedCenter sold its ASC operations to Southlake, Texas-based Candor Healthcare.

Montecito Medical Real Estate acquired Flowood, Miss.-based NewSouth NeuroSpine Building, which includes a surgery center.

Global Medical REIT made a series of acquisitions between March 31 and May 26, including Flower Mound, Texas-based Lone Star Endoscopy Center.

St. Paul, Minn.-based HealthEast and Minneapolis, Minn.-based Summit Orthopedics formed a deal that gave HealthEast a minority interest in Summit's Vadnais Heights (Minn.) Surgery Center.

After facing competition from Minneapolis-based Fairview Health Services, Duluth, Minn.-based Essentia Health opted to invest $14 million into expansion. With part of the investment, Essential Health will buy a minority ownership stake in Grand Rapids, Minn.-based Lakewood Surgery Center.

Surgical Care Affiliates made an equity investment in Danbury-based Western Connecticut Orthopedic Surgery Center, effective May 1. The addition expands SCA's network to seven surgery centers.

Miami-based Baptist Health South Florida acquired a controlling interest in Sunset, Fla.-based Galloway Surgery Center and in Kendall (Fla.) Endoscopy Center.

Alabama-based The Sanders Trust acquired Hagerstown, Md.-based Parkway Professional Center, which includes Parkway Surgery Center, a Surgical Care Affiliates facility.

Great Neck, N.Y.-based Northwell Health formed a clinical affiliation with Syracuse, N.Y.-based Crouse Health. Northwell is acquiring two ASCs through the action.

Providence, R.I-based Prospect CharterCare purchased Johnston, R.I.-based Blackstone Valley Surgicare, Rhode Island's largest freestanding ASC.

Tifton, Ga.-based Tift Regional Health System purchased Tiftarea Urology and its ASC in Tifton.

Lafayette, Ind.-based Unity Healthcare repurchased ownership of the Unity Surgical Center in Lafayette, Ind., from Indianapolis-based Franciscan Health.

Great Neck, N.Y.-based Northwell Health is buying a 20 percent stake in Harrison, N.Y.-based Surgical Specialty Center of Westchester.

Roanoke, Va.-based Vistar Eye Center acquired Rocky Mount, Va.-based Saxon Angle and Associates.

Jamison, Pa.-based Physicians Endoscopy is partnering with St. Mary Medical Center, the Gastroenterology Group PA and Center for Colon and Rectal Health physicians, all based in Langhorne, Pa., to acquire a minority interest in Langhorne-based The Endoscopy Center at St. Mary.

Joint ventures

The New York State Department of Health approved the partnership between pain management physician Frank Adipietro, MD, gastroenterologist Dhiren Mehta, MD, and Greenport, N.Y.-based Eastern Long Island Hospital to construct a new surgery center.

Hartford (Conn.) HealthCare and Avon, Conn.-based Constitution Surgery Alliance opened the Constitution Surgery Center East in Waterford, Conn., Nov. 16.

Compass Surgical Partners teamed up with Stuart, Fla.-based Martin Health System and local physicians to open Port Lucie, Fla.-based Tradition Surgery Center.

Bozeman (Mont.) Health is opening a new $20 million clinic through a partnership with United Surgical Partners International.

Carle and Christie Clinic physicians broke ground on a new joint venture surgery center in Champaign, Ill. Both groups are based in Champaign.

Lake Charles-based Christus Health Southwestern Louisiana entered into a joint venture with Prien, La.-based Imperiale Calcasieu Surgical Center.

Abilene, Texas-based Hendrick Health System dedicated its new surgery center in Brownwood, Texas, on May 12. The center is a joint venture between the health system and Abilene and Brownwood physicians.

Rice Memorial Hospital and Affiliated Community Medical Centers teamed up to open a new $11 million ASC. Wilmar Medical Services is building the facility, which is its largest investment to date.

SurgCenter Development and physician investors opened a new surgery center in Zeeland, Mich. The ASC costs $4.5 million.

SurgCenter Development teamed up with Miami Surgical Suites' physicians to open its 13th operational center in Florida. Ten surgeons specializing in orthopedics, pain, podiatry and otorhinolaryngology practice out of the center.

Pismo Beach, Calif.-based SurgCenter Development teamed up with Miami Surgical Suites to open its 13th operational center in Florida.

Florida-based Axis Health Partners joint-ventured with Davie, Fla.-based ANF Group on Cypress Creek Medical Pavilion, which will include an ASC, in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.

OrthoSports Athens (Ala.) and Athens-Limestone Hospital started construction on a new facility featuring an ASC and medical office building.

MidMichigan Health, local physicians and Regent Surgical Health opened a multispecialty ASC in Isabella County, Mich.

Elgin, Ill.-based Advocate Sherman Hospital, 13 physician investors and Deerfield, Ill.-based Surgical Care Affiliates received Illinois Health Facilities and Services Review Board approval to build a $12.7 million ASC.

Winston-Salem, N.C.-based Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center partnered with Surgical Care Affiliates to open Wake Forest Baptist Health Outpatient Surgery—Clemmons.


United Surgical Partners International entered into a partnership with Santa Barbara (Calif.) Surgery Center.

Phoenix-based The CORE Institute partnered with Arizona's largest health system, Banner Health, on a new orthopedic-driven ASC, Banner CORE Union Hills Surgery Center, also in Phoenix.

The 7,086-square-foot Genoa City, Wis.-based Geneva Surgical Suites opened on July 24 through a partnership with area physicians and SurgCenter Development.

Atlanta Orthopaedic Institute Surgery Center partnered with Practice Partners in Healthcare, a surgical services provider, to develop and manage an ASC.

Pittsburgh-based Allegheny Health Network and Highmark, an insurance company, partnered to create a 23,000-square-foot surgical center.

Physicians Endoscopy signed a strategic agreement with Digestive Healthcare Center physicians on the company's 58th partnered center — Central Jersey Ambulatory Surgical Center in Hillsborough Township, N.J.

Sheridan Capital Partners portfolio company Dermatologists of Central States entered into a partnership with Battle Creek, Mich.-based Dermatology and Skin Surgery Center.

Cleveland Clinic and Jupiter, Fla.-based Rendina Healthcare Real Estate partnered to construct a $32 million, 72,000-square-foot health center in Coral Springs, Fla. The center will include an ASC.

Sheridan (Wyo.) Memorial Hospital and Sheridan (Wyo.) Surgical Center signed a business and real estate purchasing agreement that will give the hospital's orthopedic patients access to the surgery center.

New York City-based Hospital for Specialty Surgery and Stamford (Conn.) Health are partnering to open at ASC at Stamford-based Tully Health Center.

SurgCenter of Lucie (Fla.) opened its doors after partnering with Pismo Beach, Calif.-based SurgCenter Development.

Ortho Montana, St. Vincent Healthcare and Yellowstone Surgery Center, all based in Billings, Va., are expanding their services through Montana Ambulatory Care Campus in Billings. Montana Ambulatory Care Campus providers performed its first procedure early in January 2017.

Frontier Healthcare Holdings and Liberty Endoscopy Center partnered to open a gastroenterology-facing ASC in New York, where the two companies are located.

SurgCenter Development plans to open Advanced Surgical Center of Sunset Hills in the St. Louis market next year in partnership with local physicians.
