Joint ventures continue to shape the outpatient landscape as health systems, physician groups, payers and investors look to expand their ASC footprints and move more care into lower-cost settings.

Here are three recent joint ventures in the ASC space, as reported by Becker’s:

1. Penn Medicine, Independence Blue Cross and Regent Surgical partnered to develop at least 18 ASCs. The three organizations will form a new company to run the centers, which will be located across Penn Medicine’s service area in Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Delaware. The timing, scope and economic impact of the ASCs will depend on factors including regulatory approvals, community needs and market conditions.

2. Healthpeak Properties, a real estate investment trust, and Brookfield Asset Management, a global alternative asset manager, formed a joint venture involving a portfolio of outpatient medical buildings July 20.

3. Charlotte, N.C.-based Atrium Health and OrthoCarolina extended their longstanding affiliation to expand orthopedic services.  The two organizations are launching an ASC joint venture to provide access to orthopedic procedures in lower-cost outpatient settings.

At the Becker’s 32nd Annual Meeting: The Business and Operations of ASCs, taking place October 29-31 in Chicago, ASC leaders, surgeons and healthcare executives will explore strategies to drive growth, enhance operational performance, navigate reimbursement challenges and prepare for the future of ambulatory surgery.
