14 physicians open total joint ASC in Oregon with Regent Surgical Health: 5 things to know

Regent Surgical Health partnered with 14 physicians to open a joint venture surgery center, Oregon Surgical Institute in Beaverton.

Here are five key points:

1. The new facility is 14,000 square feet and designed as a center of excellence for orthopedics, total joint replacements and spine surgery. The center also hosts pain management cases.

2. Oregon Surgical Institute was designed with 6,000 square feet of undeveloped space for an overnight stay area. A new law in Oregon allows patients to stay at ASCs for 48 hours. "If they can stay 48 hours rather than the 24 hours possible now, we have two opportunities: even more patients will be appropriate for surgery in our outpatient setting, and we can continue to add more complex cases," said Jim Ballard, MD, a partner in the center.

3. Surgeon owners of the center represent seven physician groups from around the Portland, Ore., area that specialize in pain management, sports medicine surgery, trauma, spine and joint replacements.

"Today we can do increasingly complex surgeries more effectively and more affordably in the outpatient setting," said Dr. Ballard. "Over the past six years, we've been doing them for 35 percent less cost than in the hospital; patients are happy and complication rates are lower. The problem was our facility wasn't robust enough. We needed to build a place ideally suited for the more acute cases. With OSI, we've built that futuristic model today and have room to grow."

4. Regent Surgical Health owns or operates facilities across the U.S., including 14 total joint replacement centers. "OSI is the center of the future to accommodate the unique requirements of complex ortho and spine cases," said Regent CEO Chris Bishop. "The move of higher acuity cases to outpatient centers is transforming surgical best practice and Regent is leveraging this expertise to assist our 19 hospital joint ventures and 23 U.S. surgery centers to adapt and thrive."

5. The partners are creating a new care model for value-based care with total joint replacements. "We're creating a care model for patients that is superb, from the pre-admission and surgery through recovery and tracking outcomes," said Regent Vice President of Operations Ann Roberts. "The goal is higher quality, more affordable care for the patients."
