University of Michigan Kellogg Eye Center Surgeons Perform First U.S. Surgery Using Argus II Retinal Prosthesis System

University of Michigan Kellogg Eye Center in Ann Arbor announced that its retina surgeons have performed the first surgery in the nation to implant an artificial retina, or "bionic eye," since the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved the device in 2013.

The device is the Argus II Retinal Prosthesis System, developed by Second Sight Medical Products.

Thiran Jayasundera, MD, and David N. Zacks, MD, PhD, performed the surgery for a patient who has retinitis pigmentosa, a degenerative and blinding eye disease.
