Covidien Opens $45M Research & Development Facility in China

Covidien has announced the opening of its China Technology Center research and development facility in Shanghai, China, according to a news release.

Covidien is investing $45 million over a three-year period in the more than 100,000 square-foot facility. It will eventually employ more than 300 people.

The facility has two core focuses, according to the company: 1) Identify and develop products that are customized to meet the needs of China and other emerging markets; and 2) Utilize the unique skillsets and expertise of employees in Asia to create and develop new medical device technologies.

"Establishing this research and development facility in Shanghai reinforces Covidien's continued commitment to providing innovative new products that will help healthcare providers worldwide improve patient care and extend healthcare delivery to more people and more places," said José E. Almeida, chairman, president and CEO of Covidien, in the release. "China is a key market in our global strategy, and this investment is a reflection of our strategic initiatives."

This is not Covidien's first facility in China. The company has other operations in the country, including 10 commercial offices, a manufacturing center and training facilities for healthcare professionals.

Covidien has its U.S. headquarters in Mansfield, Mass.
