WHO: Smoking costs world $1T annually: 3 quick notes

A World Health Organization and National Cancer Institute report found smoking costs nations around the globe more than $1 trillion annually, according to The Washington Post.

Here are three quick notes:

1. Annually, smoking kills nearly 6 million people, with the report expecting this figure to increase by more than 33 percent by 2030.

2. The report authors referred to smoking as one of the largest causes of preventable premature deaths.

3. Based on these findings, WHO advises countries to adopt policies that increase control over tobacco use. The organization suggests raising taxes and increasing prices on cigarettes.
