Question: We have an enzyme spray that is supposed to be used in decontamination when instruments are brought back. However, people are worried that spraying inside the OR rooms will aerosolize any blood/bio burden. Can you speak to that?

Ruth Shumaker: They need to check [manufacturer] guidelines. Many of the sprays are designed to spray on instruments before they arrive in the sterile processing department. You spray the instruments after the procedure is complete, not while the case is in progress.
