Here are six things to know, according to the report:

1. The device is a patch sensor used on the chest that includes ECG electrodes and an axillary temperature probe.

2. The patch can measure heart rate, respiratory rate and body temperature.

3. An alert will be sent to a nurse via secure messaging solutions if the patient’s health information exceeds a set threshold.

4. In the testing at St. James University Hospital in the United Kingdom, the patch will send vital sign information to the hospital IT systems every two minutes.

5. One limitation to this type of technology is the ability to accurately monitor a patient’s heart rate, according to the report.

6. Another limitation is that 50 percent of the respiratory rate data was rejected by a study’s system due to poor data quality.
