Theranos expands board members, shifts organizational structure — 5 insights

Palo Alto, Calif.-based Theranos added three new members to its board of directors and plans to implement a new organizational structure.

Here are five insights:

1. Fabrizio Bonanni, PhD, will join the board. He previously served as executive vice president of biotechnology company Agmen and has experience in operations, quality and compliance.

2. Epidemiologist William H. Foege, MD, former CDC director, and Richard M. Kovacevich, former CEO of Wells Fargo, will also serve on the board.

3. President and COO Sunny Balwani is retiring form the company.

4. Theranos is transforming its organizational structure to emphasize technology and clinical operations.

5. These leadership changes come in the midst of the U.S. Attorney’s Office and the Securities and Exchange Commission investigating Theranos to see if the company misrepresented the readiness of its technologies and operations.
