The 'marketing' opportunity of suture removal — 3 reasons it's essential

Removing sutures is a marketing opportunity for surgeons, according to hand surgeon Jay Talsania, MD.

In an article published on KevinMD.com, Dr. Talsania gave three reasons removing sutures is crucial:

1. It offers an opportunity to communicate with patients face-to-face.
2. It helps avoid postoperative complications such as swelling and stiffness.
3. It's a chance to reiterate recovery instructions and expectations.

"In the long run, I believe it is an oversight to not make time for this important visit," Dr. Talsania said. "To see your patients, touch them and speak with them helps them to experience your compassion and encourages them to spread the word about their experience, which will help to build your practice. Removing your own sutures is, in essence, 'marketing.'"

Dr. Talsania practices at Allentown, Pa.-based OAA Orthopaedic Specialists.
