Study: Hand Massages Ease Ambulatory Surgery Patients’ Anxiety

Massaging the hands of ambulatory surgery patients can reduce their anxiety without affecting the flow of the procedure, according to a study in AORN Journal.

Researchers conducted a quasi-experimental study at a community hospital to assess the effect of hand massage on patient anxiety in the ambulatory surgery setting. They found that patients who received hand massage had lower anxiety levels than patients who received standard nursing care. Furthermore, hand massage did not disrupt the flow or timing of the procedure, according to the study.
